Tips on How to boil Bacon and Cabbage

Learn how to boil bacon and get an easy traditional Irish Boiled Bacon and Cabbage Recipe that only has 10 Steps! We also give some insider tips on how to make the bacon turn out better AND give you some bacon safety advice. Bacon is pork so you need to know the proper handling, storage and cooking of bacon to prevent possible sickness. If you were looking for a way to cook regular American sliced bacon you can click on this link to read our article on How to Cook Bacon in the Oven!

Basic Boiled Bacon Information.

The Bacon that is boiled for Irish dishes is NOT the same as American sliced bacon! Irish bacon comes from the back of the pig and is also called Back Bacon or Rashers. It is similar to Canadian Bacon. If you have a recipe that calls for Irish Bacon but you can’t find any at your local grocery store contact a butcher shop. But in reality you can substitute Irish Bacon and Canadian Bacon in a pinch. The cooking (boiling the Bacon) will work just the same. Also, Irish corned beef and Cabbage is probably better known then the Bacon and Cabbage dish we have so you can substitute corned beef for the Irish Bacon if you just want a traditional Irish Dish. I just wouldn’t do it on the thin sliced American bacon as it would not be any wheres near the same. The Canadian and Irish Bacon is more like a Ham to me.

Finally, if you want to know how to safely handle, prepare and store your bacon you can click on this link for the USDA page on How to Cook Bacon and Bacon Safety.

Here is the traditional Irish Cabbage and Boiled Bacon Recipe

What you will need to make Boiled Bacon and Cabbage:

1 pound of boiling bacon

1 head of cabbage

1 covered pot to cook it in on the stove top

1 pound of potatoes (the smaller potatoes not large baking potatoes)

Seasoning like a good sharp mustard or a steak sauce if you prefer

Salt and Pepper to taste

The 10 step Boiled Bacon and Cabbage Instructions:

Place the Bacon in the pot and add water to cover the bacon.

Bring the water to a boil (High temperature on the burner).

If any white or yellow “scum” or suds float to the surface this is normal just skim it off.

Simmer for 1/2 hour covered.

While it is simmering add the 1 pound of potatoes to another pot and cove with water.

Bring the potatoes to boil and allow them to cook boiling for about 20 minutes a pound.

When they are done remove from the stove and set aside.

Once the half hour of simmering the cabbage is up, cut the cabbage into quarters and add it to the pot.

Cook gently for 1/2 hour (not a rolling boil. Just a very light light boil).

Finally Drain the water and serve the cabbage, Bacon and potaotes on plates with the mustard or steak sauce!

A nice hard dinner roll is a nice side for this.

Also you can click on this link for a great baked potato side dish

Recipe for baked Potato with Sour Cream, Bacon And Cheese!

Recipe Ingredients:

1 or more medium to large Russet Potato (but you can use any large baking potato)

Sour cream and or

Butter and or

Bacon bits and or

Cheese (whatever kind you like) and or

Onion and or

You get the idea whatever you want to put in there. Safe bet is butter salt cheese and bacon bits.

The only other item you will need is Tin foil and an oven safe pan to cook them in!

Instructions to Bake the Potatoes in the Oven:

1) Preheat oven to 275 F for non crispy potatoskins, 375 for crispy skins (also speeds cooking by 10 or 15 minutes).

2) Make sure that the potato’s skin has a nice even brown tone when selecting your potato. Green is not as ripe.

3) YOU MUST poke thru the tops of the potatoes with a fork once or twice before cooking. (This stops them bursting in the oven.)

4) Wrap the potato in foil and either place in pan and in oven or Place the Potato in the oven directly on the oven shelf.

5) A medium size potato takes about 1 hour 15 mins. A large Potato about 1.5 hours! (now you know why I have the microwave instructions below)!

6) Next remove the Cooked Baked Potato from the oven and let cool 5 minutes

Open the foil and slice down middle with knife. It will still be very hot.

9) I like to dice up or mash the inside of mine a little so the toppings soak in more and don’t just run out on table.

10) I add my butter and salt first, then bacon sour cream and finally cheese.

As the main course: Serve on a plate. Side dishes that work well are biscuits, or garlic bread and a vegetable like Broccoli

How to bake a Potato in a Microwave oven

Directions:

DO NOT PUT FOIL IN THE Microwave !!! Microwave ovens freak out when you put metal in them.

1) Scrub the potato clean but leave the skin on.

2) Poke holes in the potato (in deep) with a fork. This keeps it from exploding in the microwave. Or worse yet they can explode when you take them out. I had it happen and it burnt me in several places.

3) Cook the Potato for 10 minutes minutes for a medium large potato..

4) ALLOW TO COOL BEFORE CUTTING INTO IT! Again they can be full of steam they are so hot.

5) Prepare with toppings just as you do on the Oven baked potato!

Other Oven Baked Potato Topping Ideas

Salsa is great- Put on your butter first so it melts into the potato, then sour cream, then the salsa then cheese on top!

Chili stuffing – I take the baked potato and scoop out a few spoon fulls (or cut it out if the potato is tough) and add chili (you can just heat chilli that you get in a can) and then put a lot of shredded cheese on top!! GREAT!

Pretty much any combinations of vegetables that will go with potato and butter – Corn is very popular as is cut up broccoli, onions, mushroom slices.

Finally a great idea is to let the people eating create their own – Put out a big dish of sour cream and shredded cheese and butter. Then smaller dishes of cut up cooked bacon, diced onions, tomatoes, chili, whatever you want. Then people can make their own and enjoy!!

Here is a Great Seasoned T Bone Steak Recipe for the Oven

While nearly everyone knows how to grill a T-Bone steak, many people are unaware how great tasting a T Bone steak can be thats been cooked in the Oven! Here is a great, seasoned t Bone Steak recipe that will knock your family and friends socks off. AND it is easy to get almost any desired flavor you want by substituting your favorite seasonings!

Seasoned T Bone Steak Recipe and Instructions

Seasoned T Bone Steak Ingredients:
- 2 t-bone steaks
- 4 tbsp olive oil
- 4 tbsp ketchup
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 12 mushrooms
- 1 small onion chopped
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1/2 tsp tarragon

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

In a roasting pan, combine the olive oil, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce for the t bone marinade.

Season the t-bone steak with salt, pepper and tarragon and place them into the marinade and allow them to set for 1-2 hours.

NOTE: You do not have to marinade if you are in a hurry. A trick I use is to poke holes in the top if the TBone Steak and then spoon the marinade on the steak. It seeps into the holes and you get the flavor almost as good as marinating without the wait.

Place the t-bone steaks with the marinade into the oven for 30-45 minutes.

Meanwhile, heat the butter in a saucepan and saute the mushrooms and onions.

Remove the steak from the oven with Care! Watch out for small children and pets. And don’t burn your hand on the oven like I did Yesterday taking out my Turkey!. Wear an oven mitt if You have one. I didn’t and I got a pretty nasty little burn.

Pour the mushroom mixture on top of the t-bone steak just before serving it

Here is a beginners guide to using an Oven

Lets start with the basics on how to use an oven :

Stove, oven, range, what the?

OK a lot of people use the terms “Stove”, Oven” and “Range” interchangeably. But really there is a difference.

A “Range” is generally a device that has one or more burners or heating elements on it that you place pots and pans of food on to cook. It may be on top of a stove or oven, or it may exist by itself.

The range can be gas or electric. Below is a basic video on using a modern electric oven:

Below is a cutaway view of an electric range or stove or oven as most people call them all, The cutaway shows you the heating elements on the inside for the stove and on the top for the range (or burners or heating elements).

A Stove or Oven has a door with a piece of glass to look in and when you open it you see racks inside (usually) to place the food you want to cook on (in a pan or something).

You can see the stove in the picture above or in this picture below. Note that the door usually has some type of sliding latch just above the handle that locks it like a lot of dish washers do. If you can’t open the door by pulling on the handle, chances are 99% that the latch is slid to the locked position.

An electric oven can be one of several designs.

Most people have an electric Oven/Range combination

The typical model has 2 or more electric heating elements on top and controls in the front or on top, one for each of the burners(this is what many people refer to as the “Range” as opposed to the Oven). There are separate controls for the Oven or stove as it is also called.

Some modern ovens may just have one flat surface with the heating coils hidden beneath it. The surface is usually dark. Some may have circles indicating where it gets hot and where you place the pans to cook on it. It has controls for the burners on top or on the front.

Most of the controls usually are in one place with a diagram showing little dots that indicate which control operates what electric burner. Turn the dial for the one you want and it heats up. If you turn it all the way it will get red hot. part way (like number 4 if it has numbers indicating hotness on a scale of one to 10 ) it won’t get red hot but it will burn your hand if you touch it!

Here is a picture of an electric oven/range combination unit:

A gas oven is similar only it uses gas for power (not car gas but natural gas which is invisible like air but has a strange smell).

Most modern gas stoves have controls that have the word “lite” or “start” or ignite”. That is because the gas has to be lit in order to work. On the top you will see the burner ignite the gas if you do it correctly. in the stove you should see or here it. When you turn to the “lite” on the dial you may have to press in. Try it on a top burner. usually you will here a “click click click” sound as it tries to ignite the gas. If it doesn’t light TURN IT OFF and find someone to show you how to use your gas stove:

NOTE: NEVER leave the gas turned on a stove if it is not lit! The gas can ignite and explode later on and even if it doesn’t it will slowly kill you. you will get groggy and confused and eventually it will kill you

Here is what a gas burner looks like when it is lit:

Note that the flame is blue. This is normal. If you turn the control nob up or down the flames get bigger or smaller. Turn it down to far and the flames can go out and you will have to relite it. ALWAYS make sure the control nob is in the off position when you are done. If it is just unlit and leaking slowly gas will accumulate in your house!!!

About the oven itself (not the range on top).

Since this article is about cooking with the oven (the oven is the big container inside. It has a door has glass so you can see inside (see the picture at the start of the oven. She has the oven door open and is removing food) we will ignore the controls for the burners on top and focus on the controls for the oven itself.

The oven usually has only a couple of controls. One set will give you a choice of “Bake” and “Broil”. There may be other choices, but don’t worry about them right now.

The other set will give you a range of temperatures from warm to broil… with degree numbers in between… 250…. 350… etc….

For right now, leave both controls set to “Off”

Opening the oven

Now, open your oven door and look inside. Most ovens have two shelves that can be moved from level to level.

The shelves are locked into a track that runs front to back in the oven. This is a safety measure so that a hot rack filled with hot food will not fall out of the oven if it over balances when you pull it forward to work with your food.

To adjust the placement of the shelves you must disengage them from the track

How to move oven shelves

Here is how.

With the shelves pushed all the way in the oven, grasp the shelf and lift the back of the shelf. The shelf should disengage from the track it on which it sits in the back of the oven. Once the back of the shelf has lifted from the track, pull the shelf towards you and it will come out of the oven. Remove both shelves. Note the difference between the front and the back… the top and the bottom of the shelves.. This is important. Next, look at the tracks on the sides of the oven. We want to place one shelf on the tracks that will place it in middle of the oven. The other shelf will be placed on the top set of tracks….

Grasp a shelf from the front with it right side up and slide it into the oven, keeping it on top of, not in, the middle set of tracks… When you have pushed the shelf all the way in, it will settle into the track lock and be locked into the trac

Repeat with the second shelf on the top set of tracks.

How “Baking” in the oven works

“BAKE” provides heat that surrounds the food in the center of the oven… The food cooks from all directions at once and the heat can be provided at a large range of temperatures…Food should be placed on the middle shelf for baking. If the food is very tall you may have to lower the shelf a bit to keep the bulk of the food in the center of the oven.

What Broiling is, the broiler or to broil and how it differs from baking or to bake

“BROIL” provides high heat only from the top. You have to position your food accordingly.

If your oven is electric, it will have heating elements on the top and bottom of the oven… When you bake both elements will provide cooking heat. When you broil only the top element will provide heat. You will place food to be baked on the middle shelf and food to be broiled on the top shelf.

With a Gas stove

If you have a gas oven… it has two parts… the oven where you bake and the salamander where you broil. WHAT A WEIRD NAME FOR A SMALLER DRAWER AREA AT THE BOTTOM OF THE OVEN WHERE YO BROIL HUH? The salamander will either be a drawer under the gas burner for the oven or a separate compartment with its own door and gas burner somewhere else on the stove. In most stoves, it is a drawer under the oven.

With a gas stove you will still bake foods on the center shelf in the oven…. but you will broil foods in the salamander… Remember… when you broil… you apply heat only from the top.

How to Cook a Pork Roast in the Oven

In this How to Cook a Pork Roast in the Oven article we give you a simple and easy Dry Rub Pork Recipe and then A complete guide to Pork! We teach you the basic differences in types of Pork Roasts and then we show you several different methods for Cooking a Pork Roast! You can click on this link for a great recipe for Pork Chops as well!

Basic rules for cooking Pork Roast:

Most all pork roasts arrive through the shoulder and loin wholesale cuts. You’ll find clean ham roasts (the hind leg) but you will hardly ever see them in groceries. Also pork sirloin roasts are in the hind component from the loin and so they match the shoulder beef roast category. While you want to cook pork enough to make sure it is fully cooked and safe to eat you do NOT want to overcook it.

It was once thought that pork must be cooked to an internal temperature of 185°F to ensure that trichinella spiralis parasite would be killed. It is now known that trichinella spiralis is eliminated at 137°F,

It is still recommended that pork be cooked to an internal temperature of 155°F to 160°F so it is safe to eat.

Bruce Aidell’s Complete Book of Pork says that meat will begin to lose moisture when it reaches an internal temperature of 140 F.

So Remove a lean cut , like a tenderloin, from the heat when the internal temperature has risen slightly above 140 F.

Fattier cuts like the Boston butt have enough extra fat to take a higher temperature.

Aidell recommends removing most cuts of port, and all roasts, from the oven when they have reached an internal temperature of 155 F.

A Dry Rub Pork Recipe

1) – Rub your favorite spices on the pork: Exact amounts are hard to specify as it depends upon taste and how large the roast is.

You can buy pork rub at the grocery store or you can use the pork rub recipe we give below.

Or you can make your own pork rub as simply as

1 tsp olive oil

1/2 tsp sage,

1/2 tsp thyme

1/2 tsp aregano.

1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp Black Pepper

Or you can just use olive oil and salt (try sea salt!),

Or a quality ALL IN ONE seasoned salt like McCalls, it is my favorite.

Or you can get fancy and try this Memphis style pork rub: Memphis Style Pork Rub (Its a rub so despite what some might say I just mix it in a bowl and then rub on the pork with my hands.):4 tablespoons paprika 2 tablespoons celery salt 2 tablespoons salt 2 tablespoons black pepper, coarsely ground 2 tablespoons cumin powder 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons dried sage 2 bay leaves 1 teaspoon dry mustard

2) Place the roast in an oven safe pan. With the dry method you will not be covering the roast.

3) Position the roast in a roasting pan on a rack with the fat side up

4) Put the rack in the center of your oven and preheat to 500 degrees for a raw roast or 375 degrees for one that has been pre-browned.

5) Place the pork roast in the oven for 10 minutes, and then lower the oven temperature to 300 degrees.

6) Cook for 45 minutes.

7) Baste the meat. Roasting meat tends to imply the use of dry heat, but many roast pork recipes actually call for the use of a braising liquid. Let the meat cook without disturbing it for at least an hour. Then scoop up a little of the basting liquid and pour it on to every 20 minutes.

Remove the roast when the internal temperature reaches 155 degrees. If you do not have a thermometer, check the roast by cutting it.

9) The roast is done when there are no signs of pink or translucent meat.

10)Remove the roast setting it on a cutting board and covering it with tin foil. Let it stand 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

The cuts of Pork that you can roast – Butt, Loin and Shoulder

Shoulder Pork Roasts

Roasts in the shoulder comprise many distinct muscles and are many peoples favorites but are not as naturally moist and tender as the other two cuts so a moist cooking method is recommended!.. These roasts can benefit from lengthy slow roasting They’re particularly flavorful an juicy!! Shoulder roasts are great for things like pulled pork!

Pork Loin Roasts

Roasts through the pork loin would be the finest of the Pork roasts. They are single muscle tissue roasts without having much extra fat. Generally you’ll find two principal roasts in the loin. The pork loin roast has a slightly stronger pork flavor than the tenderloin and is incredibly lean. It compares in leanness to chicken breast.

Brining Pork Roasts

Brine is basically a solution of non-iodized salt and water. The various meats has a much less focus of salt and drinking water than the solution so Mother Nature will take over to equalize the two. Fundamental brine is 1 cup of non-iodized salt to a single gallon of water. All kinds of flavorings might be additional towards the brine and will probably be imparted towards the pork roast. A brined pork roast will increase in weight because of the brining. The fat is all h2o. Because the pork roast is cooked most in the h2o is prepared out but some stays resulting in a moist and tender beef roasts. The shoulder and sirloin beef roast will advantage from brining but they’re just good without it credited on the extra fat content material.

The difference between the dry method we just showed you and the moist method.

These two are the “moist heat” strategy as well as the “dry heat” approach.

Dry heat is most often used on cuts that are naturally tender, such as bacon, chops, steaks, loin roasts, and tenderloins. Dry high temperature can be utilized from the oven, on the grill or my preferred the smoker.

Moist Heat is most often used on cuts that are less tender, such as ribs, shoulder cubes and boneless Boston butt roasts. Pot roasts and braised roasts are examples of the moist high temperature preparing technique.

I do not know how to do the moist method in the oven. I Use a crock pot when I want to slow cook pork. So we are covering the most common method here – The dry method – How to cook Pork Roast in the Oven in a pan!

In this article we are going to teach you some great tricks for cooking bacon in the oven and teach you some Bacon safety information (Bacon is pork so proper handling and cooking of pork is important). If you want to cook bacon quickly you can click on this link to read our article on How to cook Bacon in the Microwave!

Instructions for safely cooking Bacon in a traditional Oven

This is really easy if you know a few tricks and we are going to give you some great tips to make the bacon come out crispier and to make it so you have less mess to clean up afterwords. OK? Lets get started!

What you will need to cook bacon in the oven:

1) Bacon – as much as you want to cook

2) A oven baking pan (really you can use any large oven safe baking pan or dish as long as it has a lip around the edges so the bacon grease does not run off the sides of the pan – so don’t use a flat cookie sheet or Pizza sheet!

3) Tin Foil – to line the pan with. This keeps the bacon grease from getting directly on the pan where it can burn and be a pain to clean up!

4) Paper towels

Instructions!

1) DO NOT PREHEAT THE OVEN!

2) Line the baking pan or dish with the tin foil.

3) Lay the Bacon out on the tin foil in a single layer.

4) Place the Baking pan on the middle rack in the oven and close the oven door.

5) Turn the oven on BAKE and set to 400f.

6) allow to cook for 18 – 20 minutes

7) while it is cooking line a dish with paper towels.

Open the oven door and with a pair of oven mitts remove the Baking dish with the bacon. IT WILL BE HOT so make sure no pets or children are near by. There will be 400 degree bacon grease in the pan and if you spill it on someone it will burn them very badly.

9) Place the pan on the stove top and transfer the bacon from the Baking Dish to the paper lined plate. The paper towels will absorb the fat.

10) Allow to cool a little and serve or use in other recipes as desired!

Bacon handling Safety Tips

You can click on this link to go to the USDA site on handling and cooking Pork and Bacon.

Here is a summary of what the USDA recommends for safely handling and cooking Bacon in the oven.

1) You do not need to wash the bacon as bacon is cooked at a high heat (usually 400f) and that will kill any bacteria.

2) Never brown or partially cook raw bacon and then refrigerate to finish cooking later. This is because any bacteria present will not be destroyed. Cook bacon completely before removing it from the heat.

3) Safe Cooking The three main ways to cook bacon are in a skillet or pan on the stove, in a conventional oven, or in the microwave. The length of time to cook bacon depends upon the type and thickness of the bacon, the heat used, and the desired crispness.

Finally you can click on this link to go to our main web page and read more great Oven Cooking Guides a.

Recipe #2 Oven Baked Sweet Potatoes!

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 375F

Before you start you will want to wash sweet potatoes well. This recipe will have you cook them whole as most of the nutrients are next to the skin and it is easier to cook them like this!

Punch some hole sin the sweet potato with a fork (just like with a regular potato this lets the steam escape as they cook so they don’t explode and make a mess!)

Cooking the Sweet Potato in the oven.

Place potatoes in any oven safe pan

Cook in an oven heated to 375° F for about 45 minutes or until tender.

Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly before removing skins.

Season and Serve

Slice each potato in the middle and add some butter.

Sprinkle with salt and pepper

Serve as a meal itself or with a main dish – Sweet potato goes great with any meat but is traditionally served with Turkey or Ham
